National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

He is the Clinical Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and Chief of the Section of Neurological Infections. Previously, he was Professor and Director of the Division of Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins University. His research is focused on the clinical manifestations, pathophysiology and treatment of emerging neurological infections with a focus on HIV infection. In recent years he has studied neurological complications of endogenous retroviruses, Ebola, Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2. His received the Pioneer award from the International Society of Neurovirology (ISNV), the Wybran award from the Society for Neuroimmune Pharmacology, mentorship award from NINDS, the Directors award from NIH and Health and Human Services Award. He is the past President of the ISNV.
